Yesterday was a bizarre day. A protest in Charlottesville, VA., held by alt right white supremacists turned ugly quickly. You’ve probably seen the video. A twenty year old man drove his car into a crowd of counter-protestors, killing one and injuring about 15. The story circled the news all day long. It was total madness.
One commentator on CNN said, “The darkness in that man’s heart is unspeakable.” That is true. So is the darkness in the heart of the white supremacist movement.
The local church needs strong, qualified, faithful leaders. Leaders who lead not out of selfishness or worldly ambition, but out of humility, devotion to Christ and genuine love for others. Leadership in the local church looks different than leadership in the world. It’s not about making yourself great. But about humbling yourself before God and others in service. Jesus said, “The greatest among you will be your servant” (Matthew 23:11, NIV).
There is a lot of talk about leadership in the church today. And there should be. The church needs leaders. Young and old. Male and female. Up front and behind the scenes.
But what does it take to be a spiritual leader?
Finding a good local church matters more than you can imagine. That’s because the local church isn’t simply a place you to go once a week. The local church is an embassy of the kingdom of God. It’s the place where heaven meets earth. It’s where Christ followers assemble to proclaim His lordship and grace before the eyes of the watching world. Nothing could be more important than that!
But there are so many churches out there. Some of them vibrant. Some of them dying. So how do you find a good local church?
Here’s 5 things to consider before joining any church.
For Christians, the gospel is everything. It’s the starting point of our life of faith. It’s the power we live in everyday. It is our hope forever. The gospel really is everything.
Here are three things the gospel does that nothing else can do.
It’s Valentine’s Day. And all over the country grand gestures will be made to prove to significant others and to the whole world how in love people are. Chocolates will be eaten. Movies will be watched. Flowers will be bought. Probably people will get engaged. It’s going to be super romantic.
And here you are single. Flying solo. And missing out.
And trust me. I get it. I’m married now. But I can still remember many holiday’s when I didn’t have my bride by my side.
And it’s easy to get down when it seems like the whole world is celebrating love and you aren’t.
So what can you do?
Here are three things you can do to survive Valentine’s Day when you’re flying solo.
Valentine’s day is right around the corner. The radio stations are blowing up with ads telling you what you should get your girl this year. Chocolates. Strawberries. Flowers. A diamond necklace. And we’re just getting started here. So, if you’re like a lot of guys, you’re probably thinking to yourself, “This could get expensive!” And you’re right. It could.
But what if there was a gift you could give your lady that wouldn’t break the bank? What if you could give her something that she’d value far more than candy or jewelry?
Here’s the best gift you can give your girl this Valentine’s Day.
Sometimes life surprises you, and the little things challenge you. We’ve all had moments where we’ve remembered something from the past, or we hear a lyric to a song, or someone says something in passing that just gets lodged into our brains. We can’t dismiss it or forget it. We have to ponder it and act on it.
That happened to me not too long ago.
A couple weeks back I came home from work. And usually when I get home from work, my girls run to the back door screaming, “Daddy’s home! Daddy’s home!” Then they crash into me and hug me until they’re over it.
But this day was different.
If you could ask God to give you something–something you want more than anything–and you knew He’d give it to you, what would you ask for?
A new car?
A better paying job?
What would you ask for? Think about it…
Listen. Jesus came into the world and died to save sinners and I, Chase Lamarr Jones, am the very WORST sinner of all…But God had mercy on me so that He could use me as an example of His patience with the worst sinners. That way YOU, yes you reading this now, can see that you’re NOT too messed up to receive forgiveness and eternal life.
