The resurrection of Jesus Christ changed everything. The day that Jesus walked out of that grave nothing could ever be the same. It couldn’t be because on the cross He conquered sin, and on that first Easter He put death to death. The resurrection changed everything. And it can change everything for you.
Here are three truths about the resurrection that will change your life forever.
Jesus’ Resurrection Gives You Freedom From Your Past
Most of us know what it’s like to live under the weight of guilt. Most of us have said things we wish we could take back. Most of us have done things we wish we could undo. Most of us have failed to do things we wish we had done. We have all made mistakes, and we all have regrets. And we’re familiar with guilt.
Guilt is like quicksand. You step into it and you sink. And no matter how hard you try to get out, you just get sucked in deeper and deeper.
And some of us are living in that place right now. We’re trapped in our guilt and shame because of things we’ve done in the past or because of things others have done to us or because of things we’re caught up in right now.
But the resurrection changes all of that.
The Bible says,
“Jesus was handed over to die because of our sins, and He was raised to life to make us right with God” Romans 4:25, NLT.
Two Things Jesus Did For You
Paul says Jesus did two things. One in His death, and one in His resurrection.
Jesus died for our sins. On the cross Jesus offered up His life as a sacrifice for our sins. All our wrongs, all our failures, all our mistakes, all our sins, everything that has us trapped in guilt and shame, He took it all upon Himself. He died for our sins.
That is a fact that will set you free. You know why? Because your sin no longer has power over you. Your guilt can no longer hold you down. Jesus took your place so that you could be free.
But that’s not all. Paul says Jesus was resurrected to make us right with God.
This is profound! And I don’t think we understand the gravity of this fact.
Jesus wasn’t resurrected to give you a fresh start or a new beginning or a clean slate. That’s not the gospel, and that’s not good news. Trust me. If you’re anything like me, you need something more than a fresh start because you’re going to mess it up again.
Jesus was raised to give you more than that. He was raised to make you right with God. That’s called justification.
Because of Jesus, when God looks at you, He doesn’t see a guilty sinner worthy of condemnation. He sees the perfect righteousness of His Son all over you, and He loves you.
Jesus was raised to give you a new identity, and new status, a new position before God.
Now, because of Jesus, you are a holy, blameless, perfect child of God.
The resurrection changes everything.
Jesus’ Resurrection Gives You Purpose in Your Present
Here’s something you’ve probably asked yourself: What is life about? What on earth am I here for? Is this really all there is?
Most people live their entire lives wondering what life is all about. And that will either cause you to become cynical about life or on a never-ending quest for meaning and significance.
Life is about family. It’s about my career. It’s about achieving my dreams. It’s about making a name for myself. You just pick something. And then you spend your life chasing after whatever that is.
And that’s called idolatry. Whatever you decide life is about becomes your god. And you spend your life serving that god and sacrificing to that god. And not only is that sinful, but that’s just a terrible way to live your life. Idols cannot satisfy the deepest longings of your heart.
John writes in his letter,
“Do not love the world or the things of the world…For all that is in the world–the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and the pride of life–is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with all its desires” 1 John 2:15-17, ESV.
Most of us live for the world. We have a love affair with the world. And that’s foolish because the world is passing away.
But Jesus changes all that.
Because of the resurrection we no longer have to live for what is passing away. We can live for the One who lives forever, the resurrected Jesus Christ. And if you grasp that, your life will never be the same.
Paul writes about this in one of his letters. He says,
“Whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For His sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish in order that I may gain Christ” Phil 3:7-8, ESV.
Jesus’ Resurrection Gives You Hope for the Future
One thing we all want is to live forever. No one wants to die. It doesn’t matter how old you are or how young you are, we all want another day.
If I told you that you had one week to live, you’d really live it up the next six days, but on that seventh day, you’d want one more day. And one more day. And one more day. On and on into eternity.
We all want to live forever. And that’s because human beings are made in the image of God, and we were created to live forever. The Bible says God has put eternity into the hearts of men.
The problem is our sin has wrecked that dream. Sin separates you from God, and God is the author and giver of life. To be separated from God is to die.
Sin and death are like Newton’s Third Law. Newton’s Third Law says, “For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.” That means if you push against the wall in your bedroom, the wall pushes back with an equal amount of force in the opposite direction. The only way to push down your wall is to exert a greater force than the wall can withstand.
Sin and death are like that. Imagine your pushing against the wall. You’re sin. The wall is death. You push. It pushes. You get nowhere. You have no power to conquer death and break free.
But the resurrection changes all that.
Jesus conquered sin on the cross. And He conquered death when He walked out of that grave. Jesus is stronger than sin and death. And when you believe in Him, He comes into your life in the power of the Holy Spirit and He breaks down those walls and sets you free! The resurrection gives us the hope of heaven, the hope of eternal life!
“I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who believes in me shall never die” John 11:25, ESV.
The resurrection changes everything. It gives you freedom from your past, purpose in your present and hope for your future. That’s the power of the resurrection.
So stop living in your guilt and shame, stop living for what’s passing away, and don’t be afraid of death anymore. Come to the resurrected Jesus and be changed forever!
